Types of Periodontal Treatment
There are two general gum infections that fall under the periodontal disorder umbrella: gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is the mildest form of this disorder. When plaque forms on the teeth, the tissues become inflamed and is characterized by redness, swelling, and a foul smell emanating from the affected areas. The degree of periodontal treatment typically ranges and depends on the extent of the infection.
Periodontal treatment for mild gingivitis can include tooth extraction, cleaning, and scaling. These measures help remove excess plaque, remove harmful bacteria, and reduce the chance of future gingivitis. The frequency of these procedures will vary according to how severe the condition is. For example, if it is just mild, cleaning helps keep the affected areas clean and debris free.
Periodontitis is a more serious version of gingivitis that requires more aggressive periodontal treatment. If left untreated, this disorder can progress to bone loss and gum disease. It can also lead to an infection of the heart and lungs, kidney failure, and more. Bone loss leads to poor digestion, weak immunity, and difficulty breathing, which can ultimately affect your overall health.
Periodontists perform a variety of treatments for periodontitis. Some of these treatments include scaling and root planing. Scaling is performed to remove pockets of diseased tissue. Root planing involves removing portions of the route over the plaque-filled surface. Most dentists use local anesthesia to perform these procedures.
In addition to these standard treatments, a periodontist may also recommend that you have dental implants installed. This procedure is done in one or two visits to the dentist and usually leads to a crown or cap that fits over your existing tooth. This prosthetic tooth replaces the missing teeth, so that you no longer need to worry about losing teeth. The healing process takes about six months, and your dentist will provide advice about caring for the new prosthetic and protecting your other teeth during the healing process.
Periodontal diseases affect adults of all ages. While it is more common in adults, young children can develop this condition as well. It is important to visit a periodontist when you think you may have been exposed to oral bacteria that can lead to this disease. Left untreated periodontal disease can result in severe damage to the gums and jawbone. You can visit your periodontist for a thorough exam and to learn more about your options for treatment.
In addition to standard periodontal treatment, your periodontist can also recommend a more invasive procedure called root planing. Root planing is performed in a dental office and can be done in one or two visits. During the procedure, your periodontist will create a deep cleaning channel near the roots of your teeth by using scaling. The scaling is removed from your mouth, and the channels are attached to your roots. This treatment is typically recommended if you have a mild to moderate periodontal condition and healthy oral health.
If you have any of the warning signs of gum disease, such as inflammation or redness, bleeding gums or loosening of teeth, you should schedule an appointment with your periodontist as soon as possible. Your periodontist can help to treat your condition and provide prevention services. The goal of treatment is to prevent any further damage to the gums and teeth and to promote the best dental health possible. This treatment can help you maintain good oral health and stop the progression of periodontal disease.
Regular dental x-rays can be used to detect early signs of disease. Gingivitis, which is gum disease that progresses into periodontitis, occurs when bacteria starts to grow in between the teeth and gums. Bacteria can travel to the bones surrounding the tooth, causing bone loss. This can then lead to periodontitis, which can spread to the jaw bone and jaw joints. Dental x-rays can help detect any signs of disease before they progress into bigger problems.
One of the more serious forms of periodontal disease is called advanced periodontal disease. This form of the disease usually involves a periodontist who treats it primarily through surgical procedures. Advanced periodontal disease is usually characterized by large, severe pockets of infection deep within the gums. These pockets can become quite large over time and can cause significant problems to people who are not following a regular oral hygiene routine. These can then progress into periodontitis, which is one of the most common types of periodontal disease. Other symptoms of advanced periodontal disease include bleeding gums, swelling around the gums, pus and adhesions.
Regular checkups with your dentist will ensure that you get regular treatments. You will then be provided with specific treatment plans for your specific needs. Your dentist will most likely recommend that you receive both surgical and non-surgical treatments. It is also important that you seek treatment from a dentist who uses the latest and most effective tools to fight infection, while providing deep cleaning and strengthening services.
